Description

This workshop invites key stakeholders from across industry, academia and government to identify, discuss and prioritise critical measurement issues that are hampering the development of the UK battery industry.

The recommendations provided by attendees will be summarised in a report that will direct future metrology research, with the broader aim being to support the UK in its aspiration to lead the world in the design, development and manufacture of next generation high energy density batteries.

The one-day event provides an opportunity for networking with a range of representatives across the spectrum of battery applications and supply chains. It will include presentations by key stakeholders on what they see as the most important measurement challenges facing batteries and an insight into how batteries could facilitate the UK transition to a low carbon economy, for example by providing solutions for electric vehicles, grid storage and household applications, such as heating.

The event will also include an overview of current metrology research at institutes such as the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), detailing recent progress, current capabilities and potential future expertise that can be offered.

Breakout sessions will allow for structured discussions around the various applications for batteries, any potential challenges that may hinder growth for these technologies and areas for potential collaboration. Participants will be encouraged to contribute to discussion on how these needs should be prioritised and to identify potential funding sources to support research into these areas. Your inputs are crucial in ensuring future research activities are directed to best meet industry needs.

Confirmed speakers include:

Dr Anna Wise – Innovation Lead for Batteries, Innovate UK
Prof. Nigel Brandon – Director, Sustainable Gas Institute & Vice-Dean (Research), Imperial College London
Dr. Valentina Gentili – Electric Propulsion System Research at Jaguar Land Rover
